Jogi returns home to find an empty house and his neighbours are cutting their children's hair in the hope that they will not be recognised. A man in a turban is shown running and on fire shouting for help, a Sikh family in a car are burned. Mobs of people run down the streets and burn buildings. Jogi's brother-in-law is beaten as he opens his shop and burned alive. They are recognised by their distinct appearances and by their names on the electoral register, propagated by the region's MLA Tejpal Arora. ![]() Over the following three days, Sikhs are scapegoated and scenes depict pockets of violence towards them. ![]() A group men to beat him and his father, and ask "what is our fault?" to which they reply is "you are a sardar". They have no idea as to what is about to happen.īy the time Jogi and his father are on the bus to work, news of Indira Gandhi's assassination by her two Sikh bodyguards that morning, spreads. It's a usual routine morning for Jogi's traditional working class Sikh family of three generations.The children get ready for school, women fry parathas, and elders and men sit around the table and make jokes. In the film, stories of the fictional characters centre on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The film is set in Delhi's eastside neighbourhood of Trilokpuri, and depicts a three-day period in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984, four months after Operation Blue Star. However, the screenplay and depiction of the 1984 Sikh genocide received a polarizing response. Upon the release on Netflix, it received mixed-to-positive reviews from the critics, with praise for the performances (especially of Ayyub's, Mishra's and Dosanjh's), direction, cinematography, background score, editing, production design, and themes. It was released on Netflix on 16 September 2022 and centres on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, with a cast including Diljit Dosanjh, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Hiten Tejwani and Amyra Dastur. Jexi's workplace comedy works better than its personal comedy, but ultimately there's not enough charm or heart to make it worth seeing.Jogi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language period drama film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and co-written by Sukhmani Sadana. Charlyne Yi and Ron Funches are mildly entertaining as Phil's co-workers who finally convince him to join them for drinks and sports after work. On the bright side, both Sykes and Michael Pena are on hand as entertaining supporting characters who poke fun at Phil and deliver genuinely funny lines. That Phil is suddenly turned into a kickball god and a serious journalist thanks to his blossoming relationship is laughable (and not in a good way). Shipp's Cate is an appealing dream girl, but her date with Phil is cringeworthy at best, even after they start connecting. One of the movie's worst aspects is its meet-cute romance. The novelty of the humor wears off quickly, and by the time Jexi proclaims her love for Phil, the jokes have worn out their welcome. But once Jexi is activated, the jokes are mostly limited to her outrageously foulmouthed AI voice denigrating every aspect of Phil's life. As put-upon wireless store clerk Denice ( Wanda Sykes) declares, Phil and his fellow millennials are like addicts when it comes to their phones. ![]() It starts off with potential, considering how devoted Phil is to his smartphone. Despite the talented cast, this tech-gone-wild comedy is neither as original nor as funny as you might expect.
